Preparing Your Home for Showings

  • First impressions are Lasting! Curb appeal is vital. Your lawn should be trimmed, walkways swept, the front door clean with a doorbell that works.
  • A minor investment in paint and wallpaper will pay you dividends in the form of a better price and a quicker sale.
  • Keep shades, blinds, and draperies open to admit light, dark and dreary rooms do not appeal to most home-buying prospects.
  • Clean the windows so the prospect can see how bright and cheerful your house is.
  • Turn on lamps throughout the house.
  • Little things mean a lot. Loose doorknobs or cabinet pulls, sticking doors and drawers, wobbly hinges, stuck windows -- are all negative factors. Take a few minutes to check and repair all these seemingly minor flaws.
  • Fix leaky faucets; dripping water suggests faulty or worn-out plumbing (major repair bills).
  • Have kitchen clean and all dishes put away.
  • Eliminate unpleasant smoking, cooking, or pet odors.
  • Brighten rooms with plants or fresh flowers.
  • Remove money and valuables from sight.
  • Open all interior doors (except closet and storage areas.)
  • Turn on exterior lights at night.
  • Leave your home when it is shown to prospective buyers.
